MySQL database is not new thing to Linux hosting. Previously i am using cpanel X mostly, and at hostmonster its using cpanel xp evolutions, where i found out its much more interesting and been enhanced in some places. Including the mysql section, take a details look after this.

To allow remote connection to this mysql, for example from your home remote pc, remote location server, or other computer that you have. You need to add the “access host” to the list. Wildcard is allow. Meaning the whole subnet can be addded. After adding the host, you almost done. If the remote server is within hostmonster as well, then no need firewall setting, else you will need it. To remotely access your databases (outside hostmonster), you must contact host monster support to allow the connection through firewall as well. Please contact hostmonster with the IP address numbers you would like to be able to connect from.
